How to Become a Comic Book Writer
- Publish a collection of short stories and scripts.
- Try to get short stories published in popular literary magazines.
- Make a website, Facebook page, Wikipedia page, twitter, and/or blog.
- Self-publish a graphic novel.
- Make names/storyboards/scripts of comic books and stories.
- Publish with a company if they will give proper printing and/or promotion. If they don't, then strongly consider self-publishing.
- Try to get on any project (TV shows, comics, movies, internet shows, etc.) that you can.
- Work on a novel and series for the long-term.
- Become an editor or intern at a comic book company.
- Meet and connect with artists, editors, writers, producers and directors at conventions, shops, and exhibits.
- Start an internet-based comic (i.e. web-comic), if not several.
- Engage your audience through the internet and meetings (libraries, bookstores, etc).
- Create a fund that is open to donations. (A Kickstarter.)
- Submit scripts, comic book samples, and pitches to companies.
- Seek places where artists are, such as school art clubs/programs and art exhibits. If you're looking for producers seek directors/cinematographers. If you're looking for writers seek a local/school literary magazine. Do you understand the idea?
- Accompany and present work with art and illustrations whether it's a comic or not. The pitch, description, title and art has much to do with getting the actual job. It's all about presentation.
- Befriend and appeal to your teacher(s).
- Many writers and artist meet on the internet, so what should you do? Look on the internet. Peruse message boards, forums, and blogs. A few website you can check out are Deviant Art, Pencil Jack, and Concept Art.
- Win competitions.
- Internet. Connect with other blogs, forums, websites, and communities that are involved in writing, art, and comic books.
- Go to readings and signings.
- Get spots at comic book conventions.
- Get the support of local comic book stores and bookstores.
- Get work published in popular literary magazines/journals.
- Make a contact card.
- Make short animated videos, or live-action videos.
- Try to befriend and connect with people who you think would be interested in what you do and who may promote/recommend your work.
